If you are a business leader planning to spend some time kicking back this summer, you may not want to think about your company at all. But if you are like me, once I am rested and relaxed, maybe chilling on a sun lounger, the creative part of me gets to work on ideas for my business. It doesn’t feel like work, more like play. To me, it’s very satisfying, to be dreaming the next stage of my business into existence. So, if you are like me and have all of your good ideas when you are most relaxed, here are a few top tips for PR fixes that you could put in place this Autumn.
PR fix – No 1 – Visibility
Spend some time considering whether you and your business are visible enough to the right people in the right business ‘spaces’. What business arenas do you know you need to operate in to be a success in your industry? Are you in those spaces and if you are, do you have the right business profile and are you known by the right people? The right people will be key influencers, who you could build a relationship with and who will help you to meet your business goals.
Create a list of the marketplaces or business areas where you know you want to operate or are working in already, then identify the key players in these areas - the leaders. Can you see why they are successful? How do they operate when it comes to managing their own reputation and profile? Take a look at where media articles are published about them and which events they attend. Then with this in mind, create a list of people you would like to connect with, events you would like to attend and online sites/ publications in which you would like to appear.
By doing this you have created a mini media, networking and stakeholder engagement plan for the Autumn. Work out how following through on your plan, may help you to achieve your business goals. Don’t forget to look for opportunities. You often won’t know what is possible until you go and find out.
PR fix – No 2 – Know your why
Many companies know how to explain what they do but not so many can say why. Your ‘why,’ is the thing that connects people to your business. This is because people want to do business with others who believe what they believe.
In the words of US business guru Simon Sinek:
“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. What you do simply proves what you believe.”
Know and communicate your why more effectively this Autumn. This will increase your levels of engagement with customers and important business contacts.
PR fix – No 3 – Your values
Everything that you communicate outwards about your business, products and services, should be informed by your company values. Your values are a key foundation for your brand, your key messages, your staff engagement activity etc…
If you don’t have any company values, maybe start with your personal values and then ask your staff what theirs are. If you can find a middle ground between your values and those held by your employees, you are onto a winner.
This Autumn, communicate a fresh set of company values internally and explain to your colleagues how that links to the way they behave with each other and with everyone outside of the company. This will help you to show everyone your brand identity and character. It’s a powerful way of saying who you are, what you stand for and why you do what you do. It starts on the inside and radiates out.
